Ten Ways We Can Pray for the President

Can you imagine being President of the United States of America? What an incredible feat, one with much scrutiny and criticism. It is said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” That seems to be an understatement for a president. I cannot even imagine the weight, whether we like the person or not.

George Washington said, “I walk on untrodden ground. There is scarcely any action, whose motives may not be subject to a double interpretation. There is scarcely any part of my conduct which may not hereafter be drawn into precedent.” I wonder if this is why he established a cabinet of advisors.

And John Adams, our second president, stated in his biography, “Had I been chosen president again, I am certain I could not have lived another year.” Have you ever done anything you thought would kill you?

Perhaps this is at least in part why the Bible tells us to pray for our president:

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,  for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

Whether we are in favor of our leader(s) or not, on this President’s Day, let’s unify and pray for a mighty move of God in the president and vice president and throughout our government and nation. God told Jeremiah:

Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare (Jeremiah 29:7, emphasis mine).

Here are ten ways we can pray for our president and vice president:

  1. Personal needs: health, family, safety
  2. Spiritual needs: for faith in and the fear of God; repentance where needed (1 John 1:9)
  3. Pray for God’s will (Matthew 6:10), and that they would not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of their minds, that by testing they may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
  4. For wisdom (James 1:5); God’s guidance and wise counselors (Proverbs 11:14). That he would seek the Lord above all else (Proverbs 8:14, Matthew 6:33).
  5. For courage to do what is right; that they would hate what is evil and cling to what is good (Romans 12:9); that they would not call evil good and good evil, put darkness for light or light for darkness, bitter for sweet… (Isaiah 5:20).
  6. Justice and humility – that they would know what God requires of them: To act justly and to love mercyand to walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8). That they would not pervert justice; not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge people fairly” (Leviticus 19:15).
  7. To know they are accountable to God (Romans 14:12). To not use their freedom (or position) to do wrong (1 Peter 2:16).
  8. To do good for our nation and to seek peace (Psalm 34:14), and help us to be a shining city on a hill to the world (Matthew 5:14-16).
  9. For them to honor Israel (Genesis 12:3), to allow us religious freedom (Galatians 5:1), and be for life (Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 30:19).
  10. Help them to fulfill their oath of office – to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and protect our nation from all enemies, foreign and domestic (Numbers 30:2), and for any corruption to be exposed (Proverbs 2:22).

We may feel powerless against the people running our government, but we have something that is much more powerful than anyone in Washington – prayer! (click to tweet)

Finally, let’s pray that the citizens of this great country would return to God, that we would truly “humble ourselves and pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways” so God may “hear from heaven, forgive our sins, and heal our land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Let’s pray for revival, in the president and in us!

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12). God bless America!

You’re welcome. I’m helping myself first. I guess these prayers/blogs/book are my way of organizing my own thoughts to pray for America. Hope it helps others in the process. xo
