Lord, Heal Our Land!

My heart is heavy about the state of our country and world. Is yours? I feel deeply compelled to write about it and pray for God to heal our land, and I hope I can make some sense of our world today and how to get our nation back. I hope you’ll pray with me at the end of this post. This is some hard stuff to address, but the Bible says,

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. Ephesians 5:11

Sadly, we not only call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20), we now celebrate evil in our nation. What’s so disconcerting is that too many don’t even realize it, because our country has strayed so far from the God who blessed us. Consciences have been seared. We don’t know God’s Word anymore (even many Christians). We don’t care what our Creator said about good and evil and how to really live happy. We think evil is fun. We’re proud of our sin. We can’t even see it as blatant evil. We don’t want to hear the words evil or sin. Truth has been redefined to mean anything one wants (If truth is anything, then it’s not truth at all). We’re so deceived we think evil is wonderful and artistic, and good is out of style or some sort of judgment.

I recently read Jonathan Cahn’s book, Return of the gods—small g. The premise of Cahn’s book is that when you push God, His ways, and His protection out of society, the way is open for false gods to come in. The gods he’s referring to are the false gods in the Bible the people worshiped instead of our Creator, the God of the Bible, and these gods are actually demons. But when Christ comes in, the demons have to flee. But now in America, we’ve pushed God out.

And the gods have arrived! They are alive and well in America—we see their works every day, everywhere. Society is getting weirder and more twisted each day, and yet people don’t recognize it as evil. These “gods” were on full display at the Olympics opening ceremony. We’ve seen the similar things on Super Bowl half-time shows, in music, videos, and games., etc. They are everywhere to the point it all seems normal, as they prance around like the flagrant demons they are, with people naively cheering them on. People celebrated at the Olympics as these demons mocked God over and over. That’s what demons do.

But God will not be mocked (Galatians 6:7).

Will we ever be able to come back from this? Will God ever heal our land and bless America again? Are we on a slippery slope, just about at the bottom where we will reap our consequences. We see this over and over in the Bible–when the people stayed close to God, obeying His commandments, they were blessed (perhaps a natural consequence of good), and when they fell away, they were cursed (perhaps a natural consequence of evil).  Read Psalm 106, for an example (link at bottom).

But, we don’t want to talk about evil, or hell, or even God, unless it’s His love and mercy, which is real; but so is His wrath.

Consider the following verses and see if they sound like the United States of America today:

…these people are stubborn rebels who refuse to pay attention to the Lord’s instructions.
They tell the seers, “Stop seeing visions!”
They tell the prophets, “Don’t tell us what is right.
Tell us nice things. Tell us lies.
Forget all this gloom. Get off your narrow path.
Stop telling us about your ‘Holy One of Israel.’

This is the reply of the Holy One of Israel:

“Because you despise what I tell you and trust instead in oppression and lies, calamity will come upon you suddenly—like a bulging wall that bursts and falls.
In an instant it will collapse and come crashing down.

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:
“Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved.
In quietness and confidence is your strength.
But you would have none of it. (Is this us?)  Isaiah 30:9-11, 12, 15 NLT

Could people like this possibly have the wisdom and discernment to choose a leader who will uphold God’s principles, enabling America to be blessed?

I’m afraid not. The Bible also says:

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. Romans 1:28  (Wow, you really should read more of that chapter. I’ll link it at the bottom for you.)

But God invites us:

…you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them. Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. Malachi 3:7

You will find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9

And God also says:

Blessed (happy, joyful) is that man who makes the LORD his trust, and does not turn aside to lies. Psalm 40:4 NKJV

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD (Psalm 33:12).

Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.  Psalm 1 NKJV

Yes, joyful are those who live like this!
Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord. Psalm 144:15 NLT

Our only hope for God to heal our land is to repent and return to God’s ways, His protection, and His blessing!

Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved.  Isaiah 30:15

Let’s pray:

Lord, we come to You and confess America has fallen far short of Your Glory (Romans 3:23). We have not loved You with all our heart, soul, and mind (Mathew 22:37) as You intended. We have allowed the comforts we’ve been blessed with in our nation to lead us away from You and Your ways. We have allowed sin to grow in our land like a plague (James 1:15). Forgive us our debts and deliver us from the evil we have allowed in our nation (Matthew 6:13)! May we seek the blessings of Your kingdom and righteousness once again (Matthew 6.33).

You are holy and just, and You do not allow sin to go unpunished (2 Corinthians 5:10), but thank You for being patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9). Please forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Help us to truly repent – to turn from our wicked ways, to return to You and seek You with all our heart (Jeremiah 29:12-13). Help us to realize the blessing on our country and our lives when we follow You and Your ways (Psalm 33:12).

May each of us pray: Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in Your everlasting way (Psalm 139:23-24).

Please forgive our sins, heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14), and lead America in Your everlasting way!

In Jesus name and for His sake. Amen.
