A Trip to Nineveh

It came and went…the day many people planned for, spent money and time for travel, and looked forward to–the total solar eclipse over the United States. An amazing event for sure, one not seen in over a thousand years, and one there’s been a lot of talk and speculation about. On Sunday, I shared a post on Facebook that Anne Graham Lotz wrote about the eclipse (link below). One of the things some have pointed out is that the eclipse’s trip across the United States would span seven towns called (coincidentally?): Nineveh. Nineveh was the city to which the prophet Jonah was sent to warn of God’s judgment.

I’ve read a lot of what different people of faith have said about the eclipse, trying to keep an open, but cautious, mind. I don’t believe every voice that comes along, but I do pray for insight and understanding, as we are to “test the spirits” (1 John 4).  Some things may sound crazy, but so did Noah–til it started to rain.

Sadly, even some Christians laughed at my post.

But how can we not consider, could God be giving us a message, a message to repent while there’s time, especially with the darkness in our nation today? All through the Bible we see God’s warnings when people continued to sin against Him. Today we only want to hear about God’s blessings. But if He is the the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), why would we think He deals any differently today? In the book of Jonah, the Ninevites repented when warned, and God in His great mercy and love relented of His judgment.

God’s warning gives us hope. Have you ever warned your kids about a punishment? Why? Because we don’t want to have do it (“this hurts me more than it hurts you”), but we know sometimes it’s the only thing that will teach them right from wrong, and we love them too much to let them run amuck.

Will our nation heed a warning or scoff at it?

There’s more than the moon creating darkness in our country. There’s a darkness covering the Son. We’ve allowed evil to eclipse good, and now evil is ramped. But few care. They’d rather celebrate it the way people cheered when the moon covered the sun.

Might there be too many “coincidences” to ignore? Can we afford not to consider that in the present darkness of our nation today, God might actually be saying to us, “America, look at the warning I gave to Nineveh”? Compared to how America started, the need for that warning wouldn’t be so far-fetched. America has run amuck!

It’s interesting to note, Nineveh was eventually destroyed years later for their return to sin.

Let’s choose to keep a reverent and watchful eye rather than risk irreverence and judgment. Whether the eclipse is a warning to America or not, America, like Nineveh, does need to repent for walking so far from God and His ways and allowing abominable things to happen in our society (and to our children!).

I don’t care what anyone says or how much they laugh, I’m still going to Nineveh.

Will you come with me?

If you’d like to take this trip to Nineveh with me, I’ll be posting prayers for America in the coming weeks leading up to the National Day of Prayer, May 2. Be sure to be subscribed so you can pray with me.

Heavenly Father, Lord and Creator of all, we come to You in humility and sorrow for what we’ve allowed to happen in our nation. We’ve allowed the pleasures of this world to eclipse You! Show us the way back to You. Please help us, forgive us, and lead us back to Your pleasures, Your righteousness, and Your blessing. Help us to honor You and return to Your ways once again in America. Please help us to make America godly again; help America to worship You once again. Help America to follow You again.

In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. Psalm 33:12
